Advanced Practice Certification

Current certification with a Board approved national certification body is a requirement for licensure in South Dakota as a certified registered nurse anesthetist, certified nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife, and clinical nurse specialist.  Historically, at the time of licensure renewal, the CRNA, CNP, CNM, and CNS has been asked to provide verification of certification.

The advanced practice nurse computerized data base has been up graded so that certification expiration dates are now monitored between licensure renewals.  CRNAs, CNPs, CNMs, and CNSs are accountable to not only maintain current certification throughout the licensure renewal cycle but also provide the Board direct source certification evidence, verifying the on going currency of that certification.  When applying  to the body for recertification, request that the Board be notified of the new expiration date and include a copy of Form C (Verification of Certification) with the recertification materials.  To access Form C on line, go to the South Dakota Board of Nursing web site at:  www.state.sd.us/doh/nursing, select Advanced Practice and click on the appropriate specialty.

The Board will not issue reminder certification expiration notices.  The CRNA,CNP, CNM, and CNS is accountable to provide direct source certification verification prior to the certification's expiration date.  Failure to do so will result in the infraction being reported to the Board(s).

Most of you have already recertified and the Form C was in your packet.

Thanks,

Don Roesler
